History of Magazines

In this blog post I will be discussing the history as well as the development of magazines.

The term "magazine" came from an Englishman named Edward Cave, after he published a periodical called The Gentleman's Magazine in 1731. He came up with this word from the Arabic word makhazin, meaning storehouse. In 1741, the first American magazines were debuted. During the 18th century, magazines began to flourish with more than 100 magazines appearing in the U.S. Periodicals became so expensive that only the wealthy could afford them. However, by the 1830s the magazines became cheaper and focused on amusement and entertainment. The change in magazine prices allowed publishers to take advantage of printing and publications costs.

Overtime magazine styles changed as well. There was improvement on different genres of magazines. Women's magazines were one of the most popular magazines in the 19th century. One of the women's magazines called Cosmopolitan was one of the first magazines that were sold for less of what they were produced for. The more popular the magazine was, the more the publications cost rose as well as decrease the cost to the customer. Magazines were also able to flourish in the early 1900s due to people having income to spend on magazines and having leisure time to read. The era of magazines still flourishes to this day. They have provided media influence on many people around the world. Magazines are more diverse in different interest areas.
